I’m the father of two small children and an active angler, so I wanted to share my joy of fishing with them.  While there are some good tips out there on the internet, I couldn’t find one site that was solely dedicated to helping families learn to fish, so I decided to start www.fishingfather.com – a website filled with fishing tips by a parent, for parents.

My hope is that this website will grow to become the definitive resource for families who want to spend more time fishing together. While I will focus on helping young children fish, you’ll also find useful articles on how to purchase your first boat, or how to get your elderly parents into it without a dock, as well as tips on proper gear choice and some fishing techniques you may not have heard of.

Over the years, I’ve become an expert at taking kids fishing. While I will never knock any of the pros out there, I don’t think most them are staying up at night trying to figure out how to put their kids on 5″ bluegill at a new lake, or worrying about how to keep them engaged while telling them they need to stop swimming in the livewell. I do.

Those late nights researching the best ways to take kids fishing have worked, and I have a huge set of smiling photos to prove it. My son has been playing with fishing rods and gazing at my fishing lures since before he could walk, and caught his first fish (after I handed him the rod) when he was about 20-months-old.  Shortly before he turned two, he managed to start casting his own lure, and hooking and fighting his own fish.  Now, he’s eight and reeling in monsters with his baitcaster, all by himself. My, how time flies!

My daughter also enjoys the sport, though her favorite part is playing with her new fish friends in the livewell. It’s always a thrill seeing her face light up when she opens up the lid and sees what we have for her to name!

I’ve invested a ton of time trying to figure out how to make fishing the best experience possible for my kids, and now I’m eager to share this advice with you. I encourage you to bookmark this site and send me an email at johnpaxton@fishingfather.com if you have any comments, article requests, or general questions. I’ll always do my best to help. Starting to fish can be a bit of a learning curve, but I’ll get you through it.

It’s a great day for fishing!
